Two members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Henry Ojuola and Folusho Michael Daniel have petitioned the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega for trying to conduct elections into their seats.
In a petition made available to newsmen in Lokoja,  Ojuola and Daniel representing Yagba East and Mopa-Muro  constituencies respectively,  said information reaching them indicate that plans to conduct elections into their seats by the commission has reached advanced stage.
The seats of the two members who defected from the parties they won elections to House were declared vacant by some members of the House during the impeachment crisis that rocked the House last year.
The duo alleged that a group of very powerful and influential people in the state may have been pushing the commission to conduct the election.
They wondered why INEC should be interested in conducting elections for their seats when the crisis leading to the call for their seats to be declared vacant has been resolved.
“After the resolution of the crisis, it became obvious that all actions, bills, motions and resolutions passed separately by each of the two factions became null and void and of no effect”, they said.
The two members said it will be an irony for the commission to continue to base crucial decision such as this on the resolution of a minority faction of an unconstitutional House of Assembly that was in crisis and sharply divided adding that they have written the commission intimating it of their defection from ANPP to ACN and that they have neither received a written or verbal correspondence from the commission, only to hear that election would soon be conducted to fill their seats.
“We therefore appeal to the chairman of the commission to stop the present course of action which may not stand the test of time. INEC under your leadership has carved a niche which must not be compromised by the action of a few. We believe some powerful individuals want to use the commission to punish us by removing us unjustifiably for failing to stand on the side of the government during Assembly crises,” they said.
