Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the United Nations and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, signaling strong support for the world body amid a broader strategic shift in global diplomacy and multilateral operations.
The position was emphasized in Abuja by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, during a courtesy visit by the outgoing UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall.
Welcoming what he described as a positive shift in strategic thinking within the United Nations system, Enikanolaiye praised the organisation for its sustained, altruistic support delivered through its various funds, agencies, and programmes. He highlighted the UN as a vital partner in humanitarian action, peacebuilding, and regional development, emphasizing that its ongoing efforts directly benefit vulnerable populations across Nigeria and the wider region.
Addressing the growing global issue of shrinking humanitarian aid and development funds, the Minister urged the UN and international stakeholders to adopt innovative funding approaches. He advocated for stronger collaborations with private sector entities to construct alternative, resilient funding models that can support long-term development goals.
Speaking during the meeting, Fall praised Nigeria’s decades-long history of active participation within the UN, drawing specific attention to the nation’s pivotal leadership role in regional peacekeeping through the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG). Fall, who will conclude his nearly ten-year tenure in Nigeria later this year across his roles with UNICEF and the UN Secretariat, noted that Nigeria continues to act as an indispensable pillar for multilateralism and security across West Africa.
