The decisive suspension of six lecturers at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, over allegations of unauthorised sale of handouts and textbooks, alongside the suspension of another lecturer for alleged sexual harassment, has been widely hailed as a bold and timely intervention by the institution’s leadership.
In a statement issued by the Polytechnic’s spokesperson, John Onimisi, the management confirmed that the six lecturers were suspended on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, for the unauthorised sale of handouts and textbooks, while investigations into broader claims of sex-for-marks, cultism and other acts of misconduct continue through the institution’s disciplinary committee.
This proactive stance by the Rector and the entire school management deserves strong commendation. At a time when concerns over declining discipline, sexual exploitation of students, and the resurgence of cult-related activities have been raised within the polytechnic community, the leadership has refused to look the other way. By acting swiftly and transparently, they have sent a clear message that academic integrity and the safety of students remain non-negotiable.
Particular praise must go to the Governor of Kogi State for the wisdom shown in appointing a Rector who is both disciplined and deeply knowledgeable in the demands of tertiary education administration. The current Rector has demonstrated that he knows his onions, a man of principle who understands that the reputation of an institution is built not only on academic excellence but also on the moral conduct of its staff. His firm handling of these allegations reflects the kind of focused and upright leadership that the Governor clearly sought when making the appointment.
The suspensions serve as a powerful deterrent to others who may still be engaging in similar misconduct but have yet to be caught. No lecturer should feel free to exploit students through forced handout sales, demand sexual favours for marks, or tolerate cultism under any guise. The message from Kogi State Polytechnic is unambiguous: such behaviour will not be tolerated, and those found culpable will face the full weight of institutional discipline.
As investigations proceed, stakeholders across the education sector and the general public will be watching closely. The management has already assured that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public in due course. This commitment to transparency further strengthens public confidence in the institution.
Kogi State Polytechnic under its present leadership is setting an example that other tertiary institutions in Nigeria would do well to emulate.
