The Sanctity of Life and Human Dignity: Christianity and Islam Side-by-Side

Both Christianity and Islam place human life at the center of their ethics. The core idea in both is:

Every human being is sacred, not disposable. That’s why kidnapping, murder, torture, and degrading treatment are condemned in mainstream doctrine.

Here’s how each tradition teaches it:

. Christianity: “Made in God’s Image”

Core Doctrine: Imago Dei
Genesis 1:27* – _“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.”

What this means:

. Inherent Value: Dignity is not earned by tribe, wealth, gender, or status. It is given by God at creation.

A child, an elder, a prisoner, or a stranger all have it.

Life is Non-Negotiable: Exodus 20:13“You shall not murder.” Life is a gift from God, and only God has ultimate authority over it.

Love of Neighbor: Matthew 22:39“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus expands this to include enemies: Matt 5:44“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Every Person Matters: Parables like the Good Samaritan [Luke 10] and Lost Sheep [Luke 15] show that no one is “too small” or “outside” to be valued.

. Human Rights Foundation: Modern Christian social teaching builds on this: the right to life, freedom from slavery, fair treatment, and care for the vulnerable — orphans, widows, strangers, the sick [Matt 25:35-40].

Application to violence/kidnapping:

Christian teaching holds that to kidnap or kill is to attack God’s image in another person. It’s also a sin against the community, because it destroys trust and family.

. Islam: “Karamat al-Insan” – The Honor of Humanity

Core Doctrine: Humans are Honored by God

Qur’an 17:70“And We have certainly honored the children of Adam… and preferred them over much of what We have created.”

What this means:

Inherent Dignity: Karamah = honor. All humans, Muslim or non-Muslim, have dignity because Allah breathed His spirit into humanity [Qur’an 32:9].

. Sanctity of Life: Qur’an 5:32 – _“…whoever kills a soul… it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.”

Taking one innocent life is equated to killing all of humanity.

This is one of the strongest life-affirming verses in any scripture.

Prohibition of Aggression: Qur’an 2:190 – .do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.”_ Kidnapping, terror, and harming civilians fall under hirabah = waging war against society, which is strictly forbidden.

. Equality & Justice: Qur’an 49:13 –“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble.. is the most righteous.”- No race or tribe is superior.

Rights of the Vulnerable: Islam mandates care for orphans, neighbors, travelers, and prisoners [Qur’an 4:36].

The Prophet Muhammad said: “He is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry.”

Application to violence/kidnapping:

Islamic jurisprudence classifies kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery, and terror as major crimes against society.

Scholars and bodies like NSCIA repeatedly issue rulings that such acts are haram and a violation of _maqasid al-shari’ah — the higher objectives of Islamic law, which include protecting life, intellect, and property.

Where Both Faiths Converge

Principle Christianity Islam
**Source of Dignity Created in God’s image Honored by Allah, vicegerent on earth

**Value of Life, You shall not murder” Killing one is killing all humanity

**Treatment of Others Love/enemy No compulsion, justice to all, neighbor rights

Rejection of Degradation Body is a “temple” [1 Cor 6:19] No mutilation, torture, or humiliation

**Community Ethic ,Bear one another’s burdens” [Gal 6:2] *Ummah* = community of mutual care
