Chief Ogwu Onoja Bags Judiciary Correspondents’ Award, Commends Professionalism in Legal Reporting

The National Association of Judiciary Correspondents (NAJUC), Abuja, has conferred an Award of Excellence on foremost legal practitioner, Chief Ogwu James Onoja, SAN, in recognition of his far-reaching contributions to legal scholarship, advocacy, and the administration of justice in Nigeria.

Presenting the award, the President of the association, Mr. Kayode Lawal, described Chief Onoja as “a towering figure in Nigeria’s legal landscape whose intellectual depth and courtroom brilliance have enriched jurisprudence and strengthened the rule of law.”

Lawal noted that Chief Onoja’s consistent engagement with complex constitutional matters and his commitment to advancing legal thought have set him apart as a role model within the profession. “This honour is not merely for achievements recorded, but for the enduring impact Chief Onoja continues to make in shaping a more accountable and efficient justice system,” he said.

He further praised Chief Onoja’s mentorship of young lawyers and his willingness to support initiatives that promote judicial transparency. According to him, “Chief Onoja represents the ideals we celebrate, integrity, diligence, and an unwavering dedication to justice.”

In his acceptance speech, Chief Onoja expressed deep appreciation to the association, describing the recognition as both humbling and motivating. He commended the leadership of Lawal and members of NAJUC for what he called their “exceptional professionalism and balanced reportage of judicial activities.”

“I must sincerely acknowledge the leadership of Mr. Kayode Lawal for steering this association with discipline and credibility,” Onoja said. “In a time when misinformation can easily erode public confidence, your commitment to factual, fair, and insightful reporting on the judiciary is commendable.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria emphasized the critical role of judiciary correspondents in sustaining democracy, noting that accurate reporting helps to build public trust in legal institutions. “You serve as a vital bridge between the courts and the people. Your work ensures that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” he stated.

Hw also urged members of the association to remain steadfast in upholding ethical standards, adding that the judiciary depends significantly on responsible journalism to maintain its integrity. “Continue to hold the system accountable, but always with fairness, depth, and respect for due process,” he advised.

Highlighting the broader significance of the award, Chief Ogwu James Onoja, SAN remarked that it reflects a growing recognition of the synergy between the legal profession and the media. “This honour reinforces the shared responsibility we all bear in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting justice,” he added.

He concluded by dedicating the award to his colleagues, mentees, and all those working tirelessly to advance the cause of justice in Nigeria, pledging to remain committed to the ideals that earned him the recognition.
