An aspirant for the Yagba Federal Constituency, Engr. Edward Olatunji Meseko, has condemned the attack on supporters of the Mopamuro Lo’kan Agenda in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi.

Meseko, in a statement issued on Thursday, described the incident as disturbing and a threat to democratic engagement in the constituency. He expressed concern over reports that security operatives dispersed the supporters during a rally using tear gas, causing panic among participants who were said to have gathered peacefully.

According to him, the use of force against citizens exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression is unacceptable.

“The reported attack on Mopamuro Lo’kan agenda supporters is condemnable. Democracy must be anchored on tolerance, respect for rights, and the rule of law,” Meseko said.

He called on security agencies to act with professionalism and restraint, stressing that their primary responsibility is to protect citizens and not to intimidate them.

Meseko also extended his sympathy to those who sustained injuries during the incident, encouraging them to remain resolute and not be discouraged from participating in lawful civic activities.

“I urge those affected to stay strong. Your commitment to peaceful participation in the democratic process must not be weakened by acts of intimidation,” he added.

The aspirant further issued a caution to political actors, warning against actions capable of destabilising unity, fairness, and equity in Yagba Federal Constituency.

He emphasised that politics should not be driven by desperation or violence, but by service, inclusion, and respect for democratic values.

Meseko also urged the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability for any misconduct.

He appealed to supporters and residents to remain calm and law-abiding, adding that peaceful engagement remains the cornerstone of sustainable political development.

“Together, let’s build a better Yagba Federal Constituency”
