Concerned by the rising political tension, spate of viral violence, fear, and insecurity arising from the public declaration of interest to contest the Kogi Central Senatorial election in 2027 by ex Governor Yahaya Bello, elders and stakeholders of the senatorial district have urged the Presidency to intervene to prevent a replay of the violence, politically motivated disappearances of residents, and the reign of terror experienced when the ex governor was in office.

The concerned elders and stakeholders said the presidential intervention was necessary for national security and democratic stability.

In an open letter in form of a Save our Soul appeal signed by Alhaji Mayaki Ahovi, Chairman of the concerned group, they also urged the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to ensure that they prevent any individuals from undermining the image of the party through intimidation and violence.

Similarly, the group appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Service, DSS, to immediately investigate the emerging threats in the senatorial district, monitor developments in the zone, and deploy preventive security measures to protect lives and property.

The stakeholders noted that since his declaration of interest, the ex governor had allegedly issued threats, boasted openly of financial power, and suggested that the forthcoming election would be different from previous ones. They said his utterances have created deep fear among ordinary citizens and discouraged political participation across Kogi Central.

*We recall with pain and concern the period of his administration as governor, during which Kogi Central recorded alarming incidents of violence, intimidation, and unexplained disappearances. It is on public record that over 76 indigenes of Kogi Central went missing..”, the letter said

The group said the ex governor has repeatedly used the word “gunfire” in reference to the forthcoming election, sending fear across the zone. The group said it has video evidence of the ex governor’s threats and would make them available if needed.
