- Calls on Federal Government to prioritize security of lives and property, and well-being of the citizens
Saddened by the shocking news of the loss of yet another promising Nigerian citizen, the Acting National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr. Sadìq Umar Abubakar Gombe, has expressed condolences to the management and staff of ARISE News Channel on the death of its popular news anchor, reporter, and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.
The ace media personality, who demonstrated admirable passion and commitment for social order, democratic consolidation, good governance, and national development in general, was reported to have died as a result of a violent armed robbery attack on her Katampe home in Abuja on Monday, September 29, 2025.
In a statement signed by SDP National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party noted that the death of this vibrant news anchor, who was affectionately known as Sommie among her colleagues, has brought a pall of grief upon the nation’s media space, particularly considering the circumstances of her death.
The party noted that “this is another national loss, and yet an addition to the number of lives wasted by the Nigerian system, expressed concerns about the worsening insecurity in the country generally, with specific grave dimension of incidences of terror, violent armed robbery and other criminalities within the Federal Capital Territory, which call for urgent serious attention by the authorities.”
The party called on President Bola Tinubu to focus more attention on security of lives, and the well-being and prosperity of citizens, in accordance with the primary purpose of government, as provided for in Section 14 (2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended).
The party prayed for the repose of the soul of late Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu and wished her immediate family, management, and staff of the ARISE News Channel, and her friends and associates, the fortitude to bear this great loss.
