Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network Africa (RAIN-Africa), a Frontline Non Profit organization advocating for ethical AI deployment, has congratulated stakeholders in the education ecosystem on the global commemoration of this year’s International Day of Education.

RAIN-Africa, a Non Governmental Organization, commends stakeholders in the education ecosystem and the United Nations for dedicating this year’s theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Agency in a World of Automation,” to addressing the intersection of education and artificial intelligence.

In a statement issued  at RAIN-Africa’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, the Executive Director, Dr. Obichi Obiajunwa, applauded stakeholders across the education ecosystem and the United Nations for spotlighting this critical issue.

“Education is the bedrock of human and societal development. In this era of unprecedented technological advancement, particularly with Artificial Intelligence, we must ensure that it enhances education while preserving the fundamental human qualities that define learning,” Dr. Obichi said.

He commended the role of education in equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to navigate an increasingly digital world but stressed that AI’s integration into education must be approached responsibly.

“Artificial Intelligence offers unparalleled opportunities to transform education, from personalized learning experiences to broader access to knowledge. Yet, these innovations must not compromise the human essence of education which include creativity, empathy, and critical thinking,” he added.

Dr. Obichi, who is also a global leading Innovation leadership expert, emphasized the importance of frameworks like UNESCO’s Competency Frameworks, which provide a blueprint for integrating AI responsibly in classrooms while empowering both teachers and learners with the necessary skills to harness technology safely and effectively.

“This year’s celebration serves as a call to action, I am urging our  educators, policymakers, and developers to prioritize ethical AI practices in education.” He mused.

Dr. Obichi advocated critical interventions toward ensuring that Nigeria’s education system thrives optimally in the age of AI.

“Our organization , RAIN-Africa, has  plans to collaborate with educational institutions and government agencies to promote ethical AI literacy and capacity-building programs for educators and students. This will help in shaping our culture of Ethical use of AI tools. “ He said

He urged stakeholders to embrace the International Day of Education 2025 as an opportunity for reflection and transformative action.

“The prospect of Artificial Intelligence in education is immense, but it must be guided by a shared commitment to human rights, equity, and ethical practices. With determination, we can create an education system that not only leverages AI’s potential but also preserves the dignity, creativity, and agency of every learner,” he said.

RAIN-Africa further highlighted the significance of the recently adopted Global Digital Compact, which seeks to align AI development with human rights and agency. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advocate for policies and initiatives that safeguard these principles in Nigeria.

RAIN-Africa remains steadfast in its mission to advance responsible AI adoption in Nigeria, working to ensure that education becomes a powerful tool for societal progress in an age of rapid technological change.
