Alh Usman Muhammed Nasir, an All Progress Congress (APC) aspirant for Okene 1 Kogi State House of Assembly seat, has described imposition of candidates as threat to democracy.
He stresses that the failure or success of a party in an election is partly decided right from the process of electing its flag-bearers for various elective offices.
Imposition of candidates on the party by some influential leaders has become a threat to democracy as it does not give room for party members to have a say in the choice of candidates to stand for the main election and this always result to imposition of unqualified candidates on voters.
He said, every candidate interested in an elective office should be given the opportunity to test his popularity within his party by a democratically conducted primaries which will produce the most popular candidate for the election proper.
“As we match to 2019 general election, I have pledged my trust in God Almighty and the good people of my Okene 1 constituency, the stakeholders and everyone who will have one role or the other to play in the course of providing an enabling environment for the selection procedures for the emergence of credible and peoples oriented flag
bearers in preparations for the general elections in 2019.
“His Excellency Governor Yahaha Bello is a man of integrity a man who stand for peace, equity, fairness and justice who will never allow his good image to be tarnished by anyone, so those whose performances didn’t measure up to the expectations of our people and believed that government of GYB will support him/her to clinch the ticket of our
party must be a joker of the year.
“Also, I want those in government to stop proposing inconsequential candidates whom in their minds know that such aspirants cannot add any value to the Project GYB 2019. Bad choices or imposition of candidates would not help us and such must be addressed now.
“Often times, handpicked candidates, who by providence win elections end up turning their backs against their godfathers and also perform poorly in office because they lack zeal and do not have masses interest in their thinking, but candidates who emerge from transparent party primaries are always popular and can easily get votes without
hustle and such candidate will be better able to represent his party and his people.
“If I am elected to represent my people, I promise to give my all to my elected position and make sure your issues and concerns of the Okene 1 constituency are fully addressed at the local and state levels,” he said.
