Alhaji Usman Muhammed Nasir, an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for Okene 1 Constituency Kogi State House of Assembly has given reasons on the need to accept the direct primaries by the party.
According to Alh. Usman, the direct primary election is a welcome idea. He noted that the major beneficiaries of this principle if adopted by the NWC are the electorates.
“It will not only give them a sense of belonging but also gives them, as majority, to decide on the basis of the popularity of the contestants who will be further presented for the general elections. If a party ensure the emergence of a popular aspirants from the primaries, it makes everything easy for the stakeholders.
“Also, it will reduce the tendencies of electoral manipulation by few minorities in the society. Though, the use of indirect primaries to chose candidates who flags the flag of political parties may have some advantages but it is only for the strong and not for the weak. In several cases, it favours the unpopular aspirants.
“Some may argue that the direct primaries may be characterized by pockets of crises but it is the best option towards a formidable steps of choosing sellable and credible candidates for elections,” he said.
Alhaji Nasir, while responding to newsmen in Lokoja, the state capital during his visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) press centre on Wednesday, called on stakeholders of his party, APC, to rally round the national chairman of the party as the success of the Osun state party primary for the forthcoming governorship election will be used as the litmus test for the adoption of the direct primaries for further primaries in the build up to the general
elections in 2019.
He reassured his supporters that which ever way the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Party choose to go, he is readily ready for the primary in Okene 1 Constituency.
Furthermore, he called on all as sundry in Kogi state to rally round and support the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello in his quest to take Kogi state to the next level of development.
“The major challenge facing this administration is the issue surrounding the payments of salaries to civil servants and most importantly the pensioners.
“Governor Bello has reiterated his plans and efforts in resolving the whole issue. I therefore urge all stakeholders, especially the Labour leaders, to work closely with those in authorities handling this issue in other to come out with sustainable solutions that would put an end to hardship which this situation might have caused.
“I will continue to maintain my closeness to the grassroots, that would be the only way for a popular candidates to strive for an enduring democracy and democratization in our society,” he added.
