Ahead of 2019 general election, a leading traditional title holder in Lokoja traditional council, Alhaji Kilani Hassan, has made case for youth engagement, calling on politicians to provide adequate jobs for them rather than engaging them in criminal acts.
Kilani, who is equally the Dokajin Lakwaja, noted that politicians are in the habit of making use of youths as thugs during elections and dumping them shortly after.
The traditional title holder gave the advice in a telephone chat with this reporter in Abuja yesterday.
Ahead of 2019 elections, he noted with concern how some politicians distributed what he described as stipends to youths in the name of politics, adding that this has made them vulnerable to criminal activities since such money was not enough to give them the needed financial support that could transform their lives.
Kilani, an architect by profession, expressed regret at the rising wave of criminality among youths.
“I want to use this medium to appeal to politicians to begin to involve our youths in productive ventures. They should  empower them by way of helping them to acquire higher certificates. We want them to be empowered to set up businesses or train them through skill acquisition so that they can be employers of labour as Rt Hon. Umar Buba Jibril is doing in his constituency,” he said.
Kilani commended Buba Jibril, member representing Lokoja/ Kogi Federal constituency for empowering the people of his constituents and urged other political office holders to emulate him.
