Lawyers in Kogi State under the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) have commenced boycott of courts across the state following the kidnap of a High Court Judge, Justice Samuel Obayomi.

The boycott was contained in a statement jointly signed by chairmen of four branches of the NBA in the state. They include; Amaechi Obiechina (Okene branch), Chief Tunji Ologbonjo, (Kabba branch) Ibrahim Isiaka, (Idah branch) and J. Akubo, chairman of Lokoja branch.

They said: “Lawyers cannot go about their normal activities when the whereabouts of a judge, one of those who preside over their cases, is unknown. The boycott will continue till the end of this week, after which we will review the situation”.

The statement said if a judge of a High Court could be abducted in such a manner, then lawyers are not safe.

“We are using this medium to condemn such dastardly act. Security agencies should wake up to the problems in Kogi State and the country in general. Activities of criminals should be checked to restore sanity,” the statement added.

They also called on the state government to deploy more police to crime prone areas.

In a similar vein, the state chapter of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN)  has embarked on a three-day strike over the incident. In a communiqué issued at the end of its emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting and signed by its chairman, Daniel Adinoyi, JUSUN condemned the spate of kidnapping in the state.

The union, which lamented the spate of attack on judges, recalled that Justice Moses Gwatana of the state High Court at Ihima, was shot at by unknown gunmen in 2013.

They called on the state government and security agencies to ensure the release of Justice Obayomi, while calling for adequate security for all judicial officers. Justice Samuel Obayomi was kidnapped on May 25, by unknown gunmen.
