Kogians: The Promoters of Their Problems by Ayeni Gideon A.

I have decided not to be concern about the current issue which had become the topic of the day in Kogi state but I must say something. I read different newspapers, online papers and I have heard many comments from different people in my area here in Kogi state. 90% were condemning the act of the state government to sack some workers in the state. I am not opposing neither am I supporting the move but what I have to say here is nothing but the truth, though the truth is bitter.

We are shouting there is no money in the state when:

  • Many people are collecting salaries in different places,
  • Some have not even step to the corridor of their work place except if there is screening,
  • Some are using forged result, and
  • Many people who did not even have a certificate. I wonder why people with no certificate should be earning salary every month while those who pass through stress and struggle for certificate find it very difficult to secure a job.

With the result of the recent screening which was recently released, I can clearly state that Kogi State is one of the most corrupt state in Nigeria when it get to the issue of ghost workers. We keep blaming our leaders day and night whereas we are the causes of our problem in this state.

The number of ghost workers in this state is more than expected not to talk of the number of ghost schools. We keep complaining that percentage salary is being paid to us every month. Why won’t it be so? I believe if all the money being paid to all those ghost workers is being diverted to pay the real workers, no workers will complain of half salary. It’s very clear that the number of ghost workers in the state is more than the number of the “Human being workers”. (Anything you called it).

Go to different local governments today and see many people who called their selves government workers. They only sit under the tree listening to Radio and gossip. It’s in their midst you will know that male gossiper are even more than female gossipers.

Also, a situation whereby only 50 pupils are in the school of not less than 25 teachers. In some schools, the teachers will even bring raw melon to the school for pupils to prepare so that it can be use for cooking.

As far as the governor did not sack all the legitimate workers in the state but move further to sack all the so called ghost workers and those with low or no qualification at all, I think that is a nice move.

We must join hands together to fight the monster called corruption from macro to micro level in Kogi State.

I will like to advice the state government to verify very well before moving on to sack workers. They should employ trustworthy people (If there is one) to handle the case without partiality. If not, they will mix sand with Garri and it wont be easy to separate (Sacking of those with good qualification), and in this, there may be problem. Therefore, those in charge (screening committee) should be objective and not to be bias.

More also, the government should not only published the list of sack workers BUT the reason should be stated. That is, everyone should know the reason why he/she is being sacked. i.e. low qualification, ghost workers, double salaries. Etc.

Conclusively, I am also using this medium to urge the honorable governor to use his great power to answer the striking lecturers of Kogi State University, Anyigba and lets the innocent students go back to their classrooms and commence their exams before it gets out of hand. It is a shame to the government if the highest school of learning is on strike and the issue cannot be addressed immediately.

I think all the Kogians and people in high position including His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello will see this and act on it.
