The Kogi State government has admitted owing its teachers N1.6 billion as arrears of salaries for November and December last year.

Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Mallam Nuhu Ahmed, who spoke In Lokoja yesterday while addressing journalists in his office, however gave the assurance that effort was being made to clear the backlog of salaries.

Nuhu listed Ajaokuta, Ofu, Okene, Omala, and Olamaboro Local Government Areas as the places where teachers were yet to receive their November, 2014 salaries while all the teachers in the state were being owed their December salaries.

His words, “The board is working with finance experts to ensure that no teacher is left unpaid, though teachers may not be paid their full salary owing to the dwindling allocation from the Federal Government.

“We do not want a situation where some teachers will be paid while others are not paid. We are working to ensure that all teachers are paid, even if it means that they will not collect full pay.

“We will commence payment of the teachers salaries this week starting from the January salary and other entitlements.”

He urged teachers in the state to be patient with the government as everything was being done to guarantee steady payment of their salaries.

Nuhu, who commended the leadership of the teachers for their understanding and cooperation, stressed that the state government was working very hard to make life better and more meaningful for their members.
