Kogi Govt Calls on Wealthy Individuals, Organizations to Partner on Assisting Flood Victims

An appeal has gone to well to do individuals and organizations who are from areas ravaged by flood to partner with government in mitigating the impact the flood has caused on citizens of the state.

Kogi State Deputy Governor, and Chairman Flood Management Committee, Yomi Awoniyi, gave the charge while carrying out on the spot assessment of the impact of this years flood in Kogi Local Government Area.

Awoniyi lamented the rate of devastation, said the extent to which the flood took over some of the communities, calls for rethink by people building on flood plains.

Awoniyi sympathized with people who have been displaced by the flood, said the state government would immediately begin the setting up camps in four locations for internally displaced persons from the area.

While noting that the state government shares in the pain and discomfort the flood has caused the people, the Deputy Governor, said relief materials would be delivered immediately to cushion the hardship of dislocation faced by the people.

Awoniyi appealed to people living in flood prone areas not to mind their historical and ancestral affinity to flood plains, but should heed the warning to relocate to safer places, noting that climate change has made the issue of flooding an annual event.

While thanking God that no live was lost since the flood began, Awoniyi assured that the state government is resolute in bringing permanent relief to people of Kogi Local Government Area, by permanently relocating them to new settlements of their choice.

Awoniyi said available records shows that Kogi State is the only state in the federation that built flood houses for people affected by flood in 2012, said paucity of funds accruing to the state government, has hindered the policy of building such flood houses and to be replicated in the flood prone local government areas challenging.

Awoniyi said the state government is more concerned about saving lives, charged people who are still adamant in moving to upland, to quickly do so as the misconception held by some persons that the flood will not come, a message most people never believed will happen has now become a reality.

In a remarks, the spokesperson of 59 communities in six the Wards of Kogi LGA, affected by the flood, Alh Abdullahi Yahaya, appealed for a permanent place of abode for people living in flood prone areas of the Local Government Area, said following the state government directives and plan to relocate people affected by the flood in 2012, the people he said have identify suitable sites for relocation.

Alh Abdullahi, praised the timely intervention of the state government to their plight, said the relief materials would go a long way in assisting people displaced by the flood.

As part of the visit to Kogi Local Government Area, the Deputy Governor paid a visit to the Ohimege Igu Koto, Alh Abdulrazaq Isah Koto, where he sympathized with the Royal Father on the discomfort the flood may have caused his subjects, reiterated the resolve of the Governor Idris Wada’s administration towards ensuring that lives and properties are not affected by the flood this year.

In a remarks, Alh Abudulrazaq Isah Koto, the Ohimege Igu Koto, praised government’s timely response to the plight of his people, and promised to facilitate the request for land acquisition by the state government for the building of camps for the internally displaced persons.

The Royal Father described flood as a natural disaster beyond the control of man, said the provision of relief materials to people displaced by the flood would help reduce the trauma the people have passed through.
