President of the Arewa Defence League Alhaji Murtala Abubakar has condemned the two-week quit notice issued to Fulani herdsmen in Omala Local Government Area of  Kogi State. It was gathered that chairman of the council Labaran Oyigebe allegedly issued the group a notice to leave the area.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday shortly after visiting Fulani herdsmen in Bagana village in Omala Local Government Area, Alhaji Murtala described the action as unacceptable.

He said his group was saddened by the directive allegedly issued by the council’s chairman, since according to him, there has not been any serious misunderstanding between the herdsmen and their host communities.

He called on law enforcement agents to take steps to tackle what he described as the high level of impunity in the area, alleging that some people have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the alleged quit notice is implemented.

He appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan, governor of the state, Idris Wada and Sultan of Sokoto to intervene in the matter.

Responding, Secretary of Omala Local Government Area Julius Atabor said the council does not have powers to chase any Nigerian from their area, adding that the two-week ultimatum was for Fulanis  to fish out the criminal elements among them.

He however added that if the herdsmen decide to leave because they cannot fish out the criminals among them, the council has no problem with that.

“We have been saying that we don’t have any problem with the Fulani herdsmen living with us. Those violently attacking our people do not have cows, they are criminally minded individuals who take delight in perpetrating evil. Our action is aimed at protecting the people, so that we don’t have a repeat of the ugly situation in Benue and Plateau States,” he said.
