The Kogi State Emergency Management Agency said yesterday that it is making adequate arrangements for all those that would be displaced if the 2013 flood prediction by the National Metrological Agency (NIMET) becomes a reality.

The agency’s acting executive secretary, Mrs Alice Ogedengbe, stated this in Lokoja while reacting to a publication that the state was preparing for 50,000 people in the event that flood occurs.

According to her, the agency is not limiting its arrangements to a specific number of people, but making arrangement to cater for all those that would be displaced by flood.

Mrs Ogedengbe said over 600,000 people were displaced by last year’s flood, and that they were all catered for by the government.

She added that efforts are being made to ensure that the state caters for as many that would be displaced, using a using a well structured method of data capturing as provided by UN and NEMA templates.

She further stated that as part of preparations for the flood, staff of SEMA as well as other agencies in rescue and emergency management have been trained, assuring that SEMA will work with the UN and NEMA in rescue operations and better camp management this year.

“Already, the nine local government areas affected by flood last year have been visited while suitable sites for the location of camps have been secured. Efforts are on-going to cushion the hardship likely to be faced by those that would be displaced,” she said.
