Flood: EU Delegation Arrives Kogi on Flood Disaster Assistance

The European Union Technical Assistance Missionare in Kogi State for a two day working visit have commended the Kogi State Government for the proactive steps taken to mitigate the effect of last year’s flood.

The spokesperson of the EU team of experts Seiro Giovanni, made the disclosure to round up their visit after inspecting on going work at the 272 post flood housing estate in Lokoja, submerged Confluence Beach
Hotel and the greater Lokoja Water Works affected by last year’s flood.

Giovanni described the initiatives to build the post flood housing estate by the state government as noble and first of its kind in states affected by last years flood.

The European Union he said is interested in the emergency planning and procedures of the state government towards the 2013 predicted flood,commended all the steps taken so far in mitigating future flood.

The EU commended the selection of 15 areas for the setting up of relief camps across flood prone areas of the state if the flood come in 2013,urged the state government not to rest on its oars in all of its preparation.

The EU, Giovanni explained is concerned about coordination and communication between the government and
people living in flood prone areas, expressed satisfaction with the warning measures put in place by all the stakeholders.

He disclosed that the EU will assist the state on the need for improved flood information management, especially as it relates to forecast and alerts procedures as well as early rescue procedures that would reduce loss of lives and properties as experienced last year .

The EU spokesperson once again commiserated with the state for recording 20 death last year as a result of last year,assured of technical and other assistance that would help mitigate impact of future flood.

In his remarks,Kogi State Deputy Governor and Chairman flood Management Committee, Yomi Awoniyi, said the EU visit was an eye opener as the state is now better prepared for emergency management.

The Deputy Governor who was represented by Gabriel Abdul, Special Adviser Emergency Management to the Kogi State Governor, disclosed that the commitment of the state government to reducing the impact of future flood in the state remains resolute.

The Special Adviser on Emergency Management to the Kogi State Governor added that the effect of the last year’s flood which is the worst in 50 years will for long linger in the minds of people of the state as it caused untold hardship on the socio economic life of the people.
