A man has drunk himself to death with a local gin, popularly known as “ogogoro”.
The unfortunate incident happened last weekend at Gadumo area in Lokoja, Kogi state.
The man, who was said to be a casual fisherman, and a bachelor in his 40s, hail from one of the Local Government Areas of Kogi state.
He was said to be a famous drunkard who had always been drinking heavily with no limit, but luck ran out of him that faithful weekend, when he drank himself to death.
We gathered that the man was supposedly to have participated in drinking competition organized by his friends on an empty stomach.
It was obtained that the organizers of the competition set a prize of N500 for anyone who could finished a certain volume of highly concentrated local gin in a record time.
Sources disclosed that the deceased gulped the whole content in his bottle under a minute and was applauded by his friends.
Soon after receiving the winning sum of N500, his intestines began to turn and rumbling. But he was not able to get any medical help before he slumped and died.
His body has since been deposited at one of the hospitals in Lokoja, the state capital.
According to the leaders of the community associations in the local government, the deceased was not a member of any association in Lokoja, even as his name could not be obtained.
