EU Team Lauds Kogi Over Flood Management

The Kogi State Government has been commended for proactive measures to mitigate the effect of last year’s flood. Members of the European Union Technical Assistance Mission made this commendation when they paid a courtesy visit to Governor, Idris Wada at Government House, Lokoja.

Spokesperson of the mission, Seiro Giovanni and his entourage also inspected the ongoing construction work at the 272 post flood housing estate in Lokoja, and the greater Lokoja Water Works affected by the flood, describing the initiatives by the government as noble and first of its kind in states affected by flood.

Giovanni,who said the European Union is interested in the emergency planning and procedures of the state government towards the2013 predicted flood, commended the steps being taken to mitigate future flooding.

The EU lauded the selection of 15 areas for the setting up of relief camps across flood prone areas while urging the government not to rest on its oars. He said he is concerned about coordination and communication between the government and those living in flood prone areas, even as it expressed satisfaction with the warning measures in place.

He disclosed that the EU will assist the state on improved flood information management, especially as it relates to forecast and alerts procedures, as well as early rescue procedures that will reduce the loss of lives and properties.

Speaking, the Kogi State Deputy Governor and Chairman of Flood Management Committee, Yomi Awoniyi, said the visit was an eye opener as the state is now better prepared for emergency management. Represented by Special Adviser on Emergency Management to the Governor, Mr. Gabriel Abdul, he disclosed that the commitment of the government to reducing the impact of future flood remains resolute.
