Concerned lawyers from Kogi West district has called for full and thorough investigation of the allegations that Senator Dino Melaye bribed the Chairman of 2015 National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Kogi, Justice Akon Ikpeme.

Led by the Chairman of Kogi Integrity Group, Barrister Oluwadare Zacchaeus, the lawyers said the investigation is imperative because the released audio tape indicate that Melaye is living on a stolen mandate.

The audio tape released recently by the popular online newsmedia, Sahara TV, which has gone viral on social network media indicated a conversation between Dino Melaye and Justice Akon Ikpeme on the allegation of bribery that perverted justice.

According to Dare; “corrupting the judiciary is the worst form of corruption that anyone can ever think of; it is totally unacceptable. We want Melaye to show reason why the electorate of Kogi West senatorial district should not recall him.

“We, the concerned lawyers are calling on the acting President to order the Police, the EFCC, the DSS, Anthony General of the Federation (AGF), Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), and other security apparatus to as a matter of urgency begin an immediate investigation to establish the truth and the genuineness of that audio tape, and if it leads to the commission of an offence of bribery and corruption, then Dino and the tribunal chairman should be compelled to face the full wrath of the law.
“We want the relevant stakeholders to call for the establishment of this link and come up with their position on it. Since the government is trying all her best to sanitise the judiciary; this will definitely lead to a great feat where another bad egg would be eliminated from the system.
“This is a distinguished senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who in a statement that went viral described the former President, Goodluck Jonathan’s government as ‘government of greed’ and described the government of President Mohammed Buhari as “the government of the criminal by the criminal and for the criminals”, while there is an allegation against him (Dino) for bribing the chairman of the tribunal in Kogi.
“This is the same man who publicly in a press conference described our Governor as a “thief”, “criminal” and using a lot of derogatory and defamatory statement to qualify a State Governor. Are we now saying such a man facing the allegation of bribery should be left un-interrogated?
“This is a senator on the floor of the senate who raised lots of allegations against the acting EFCC Chairman, and publicly told him that he had failed the integrity test; but this is the same Dino that has issue of bribery that bothers on integrity question. We want this issue to be thoroughly investigated and get to the root of the matter”
The group urged all relevant agencies saddled with the responsibilities of ensuring justice and fairness to all, to investigate the allegations and ensure that Senator Melaye and his cohorts face the consequences of their actions if they were found wanting.
