The controversy surrounding Governor Yahaya Bello’s multiple registration in the ongoing continuous voters’ registration exercise by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a new twist as leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi state demand his resignation.

In a world press conference today in Abuja, the party leaders, led by the State Chairman of the party, Alhaji Haddy Ametuo and Senator Dino Melaye, called on members of Kogi State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment process against the Governor for contravening the Electoral Act.

Speaking on behalf of the leaders, Senator Melaye said Governor Bello is celebrating his political obituary.

“So, this is now about the people, it is not about the beneficial, or parasitic relationship between the House of Assembly and the Governor.

“This is about the people. When a traditional ruler commits a sacrilege in a community, he is banned from that community. Since we have no power to ban him, we have powers to ask him to step aside or we use the instrumentality of the law.

“The questions here for the House of Assembly members is; is there an infringement committed? The answer is a capital YES. Is there an infraction on the face of the law by the Governor of Kogi State? The answer is YES. And based on this infraction we are asking the State House of Assembly to proceed on an impeachment proceeding against the Governor, and that will happen.

“We do not only regret fielding Yahaya Bello, but we have now resolved that there will be more investigation before we produce a candidate in the nearest future. We were supporting generational change, we were supporting younger generation taking over but we did not carry out due diligence because from the story of Yahaya Bello we heard eventually, we learnt that even when he was a child, how he will use catapult to carried peoples’ rams to be cornered and then ‘democratize’ them. It is enough for us to have been weary of Yahaya Bello. The information we heard eventually on how he will go himself as a student of ABU Zaria and produce fake meal ticket to go and eat. If we had such information we would have known that he is fraudulent ab initio but unfortunately, we are learning too late and we regret it”, he said.

In his remarks, APC Chairman in Kogi, Alhaji Hadi Ametuo, backed Melaye’s comments.

He said, “we know the law and INEC says it is criminal. We will abide by what Melaye has just said. That is our position.’’

Other party chieftains at the briefing included Senator Mohammed Ohiare, Senator Ocheja Dangana and Senator Abdulrahman Abubakar.
