Council Chairmen in Okunland Advised to Provide Vehicles for Security Agents

Council Chairmen in Okunland have been advised to provide vehicles for the security agents to enable them go about surveillance duty in order to curb the excess of armed robbery in the area.

The advice was given by the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Bello in his ruling on the motion moved by the member representing Kabba/Bunu Constituency , Hon Nathaniel Taiwo on the issue of insecurity of lives and property of this people.

Hon. Bello who stated that for an effective policing there would be need to provide the security agents with vehicles to ease their movement . He added that the council chairmen should also constitute a vigilante compliment police efforts in the area of security in the area.

Earlier, the mover of the motion and a member representing Kabba/Bunu Constituency, Hon. Nathaniel Taiwo, called on the State Commissioner of Police to urgently declare war on armed robbers in Kabba/Bunu and the entire Kogi State.
Hon. Taiwo stated that combine team of Police and army should be on perpetual surveillance on all the roads leading in out of the area, pointing out the roads leading into Kabba/Bunu should be declared disaster area and also urged the house to resolve that the council chairmen should service the two vehicles bought for the use of the security agencies in the area.

The Assembly member stated further that the menace of armed robbery on the roads is worrisome adding that the rate at which armed robbers terrify the innocent citizens that ply Kabba-Lokoja road, Kabba- Ilorin road, Kabba-Okene road, Kabba Ike-Kiri road,. Kabba- Olle road, Kabba-Ayere road as well as Kabba Iyara-road, cannot be overemphasized as many people have lost their lives and valuables on these roads.

He explained further that many women have been raped along these roads by armed robbers as well as many children have also been reduced to orphans as a result of the killing of their parents by robbers.

Hon. Taiwo stated that there was a recent attack on UBA Bank in Kabba where they made away with several millions of Naira explaining that a member of NURTW was killed along the same road while on transit, He said this development has made the drivers union to stay at home for same days causing hunger and starvation as market women and men were not able to take their goods to the market.

The law-maker disclosed that on the Ist of July this year an armed robbery gang invaded First Bank PLC at Kabba and they operated for over 40 minutes shooting sporadically gained entry and went away with huge sum of money without Intervention by the law enforcement agencies.

The member representing Ogori/Magongo Constituency, Hon. Gabriel Daudu seconded the motion and urged law enforcement agency to alive into their responsibilities and called on the users of the road not to panic about the road.
Barr. Henry Ojuola member representing Yagba East said Yagba to Egbe and Yagba to Isanlu are under siege adding that for four weeks now there has been no bank operations in the area as they are being threaten by armed robbers.

Hon Gwatana of Bassa Constituency supported the motion and called on all security agencies to be at alert always so as to protect the lives and property of the people at the grassroots.

The Member representing Adavi Constituency, Hon. Lawal Abdullahi, called for the need for community policing to protect the lives and property of the people in Kogi State.

In his contribution, Comrade Friday Sani said the issue of insecurity is a general problem in Nigeria and called for a collective way of finding a solution to the problem.

Hon. Sani stressed on the need to set up a vigilante to complement police and other security agencies.

Member representing Yagba West Constituency, Hon. Abidemi Abayomi said the root cause of the problem are bad roads and unemployment suggested for the need to organise a seminar on security which should include the traditional rulers and legislators in order to find solution to the problem.
