Kogi State Ministry of Water Resources has blamed the recent hiccups in regular water supply to residents of Lokoja on the epileptic power supply.

Besides, the state government has commenced arrangements for the introduction of metering system for beneficiaries of the Greater Lokoja Water Works.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr Olatunji Oshanisi made the disclosure while addressing the newsmen in Lokoja recently.

Engr. Oshanisi who identified poor power supply as the major challenge confronting the board at the moment, said the digitized water supply system responds only to high power voltage.

He further explained that while it is difficult to pump water under low voltage, the power generating plants can only run for nine hours, which according to him, is not enough to feed the two gigantic tanks supplying residents of Lokoja.

The Commissioner promised to improve on water supply as soon as the power stabilizes, urging residents to be patient with the board and disregard rumours making the round that the scarcity was due to lack of diesel to run the plant.

He also used the occasion to reassure residents that are yet to be networked to the water line that they would soon be incorporated following the N1.8 bn recently earmarked for water reticulation project in the state capital.

Engr. Oshanisi also revealed plans by government to procure 6,000 water meters to assist government in curbing wastage and enhance payment for maintenance and smooth running of the system.

On the vandalism of water pipelines in Lokoja, the Commissioner said tighter monitoring measures have been initiated involving the management and staff of the board to address the trend, while calling on all stakeholders to join hands with government to ensure effective service delivery.
