The police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have pledged to strengthen the existing relationship to ensure the success of the 2019 general elections.
The Kogi State Commissioner of police, Mr Wilson Inalegwu made the pledge on Thursday in Lokoja while receiving the new Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state,  Prof. James Apam.

Inalegwu said the state was “not hot as being portrayed”, saying that the problem of violence before, during and after elections in the state had been tackled by the police in collaboration with other security agencies.
He also said that police was on top of security problem around the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise  in Dekina and Anyigba communities.

The Commissioner said that the state was at the Centre of the country, sharing borders with nine states and the federal capital territory, saying that this unique position was partly responsible for its security challenge.

He assured the new Resident Electoral Commissioner of the readiness of his command to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials and materials during the 2019 elections.

Inalegwu also promised that police will provide security for INEC offices in all the 21 local government areas in the state to ensure safety of staff and materials.

Earlier, the new Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Apam had told the police commission that the INEC was desirous of improving the relationship with the police to sustain and improve upon its 2015 performance.

He attributed the standards achieved in 2015 to cooperation among all critical stakeholders , including the police , media, political parties, politicians and others security agencies and said that this must be sustained.

Apam said that process towards the 2019 elections  had started with the ongoing voter registration exercise, urging eligible voters come out and register.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner also visited the state Director of the State Security Service and the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to seek their support for the INEC.
