Kogi State Government has hailed the “patriotism” of workers for disregarding the declaration of strike by labour unions in the state.

Director General on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Kingsley Fanwo gave the commendation while addressing newsmen in Lokoja, Friday.

It would be recalled that the Labour unions had urged workers in the state to embark on an indefinite strike over disagreement with government on electronic register, contributory and salary issues.

However, majority of the workers were seen at their duty posts when our reporters visited the Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals.

On why the strike failed to ground the state, Fanwo said the workers are tired of the “self-serving attitude of their leaders”.

He said, “Government is shocked by the attitude of the Labour union leaders in the state. This administration has been running an inclusive government and labour has always been a part of labour related decisions in the state. The State Chairmen of the NLC and TUC publicly endorsed the use of electronic register and contributory pension scheme.

“For them to create an impression that they are against policies that will enhance the efficiency and welfare of workers is unfortunate. Kogi workers have accepted those policies and have keyed into them.

“The failure of the workers to comply with the directive of union leaders to embark on a needles strike and the resort of the unionists to violence and harrassment of law abiding workers are negative signals to the leaders that they need to rediscover the trust needed for good leadership”.

Fanwo said the union leaders are “dancing to beats from under the waters to throw the state into chaos and create negative impressions”, assuring workers of the readiness of government to ensure work place security.

“We owe the workers and our people security of their lives and property. As a responsible government, we urge miscreants not to test our will to ensure peace in Kogi State”.
